Maybe Sears should do a throw back to their old advertising campaigns because I would totally go to this… too bad it was sixty-something years ago.

Craving Springfield

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

For the past four years around this time I would be packing up for Springfield, MO getting ready for College to start back up. But now I have graduated… the reality hadnt really set in until just now when I realized I wouldnt be going back to Missouri State. Some of the people I spent four years in class with I will probably never see again. Just thinking about it makes me kind of sad.

Hand Drawn Type

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Sometimes we need to appreciate the little things in life and hand-done type I think is really under appreciated. Everyone writes differently no ones hand writing is the same and that is what makes is so beautiful. I was talking with someone not to long ago about how children in the future might not even learn cursive or even regular hand writing and that just kind of freaked me out. Hand writing is not just a form of communication it is a fingerprint of who someone is.

Challange

I want to challange all of you to write a hand written letter to someone you care about… a note, a card, a picture. Send it through the snail mail and get excited about writing with pens, pencils, markers. Hopefully you will get a nice hand written response back.

Vinyls and Condensed type

Friday, August 19th, 2011

I got a record player from my dad for my birthday (awesome birthday present). But even better then that I got a bunch of great old albums to go a long with it… so looking through these old albums with my dad I kind of got a flash back into what my parents where like when they were younger. Not only did they have awesome music taste (which I inherited) but they also had a very artistic eye for some great cover art. I want to start collecting old vinyl records now just to listen to them and look at there cover art.

On a side note: my Mom and I usually go to the Alton Farmers Market on saturday mornings and there is a lady there who has taken old vinyl records and warped them into ash trays/candy dishes. It looks really cool and it could totally be a good use for the old records that you dont appreciate anymore (or you could send them to me and I can add them to my already very eclectic collection). Here is a cool link to check out for some more interesting crafts for old records.

Library

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

When I was in High School I worked at the Library. It was one of the most interesting jobs I have ever had. Just learning the Dewey Decimal System was exciting. It is weird to think about how the skills I learned there have played a role in what I do now. Of course reshelving books you learn how to organize but more importantly you learn how patrons process information and how the proper placement of materials works throughout the library. It is a lot like designing a wireframe for a website… you have to understand how to make it as easy as possible for someone to navigate through your site and sort through all your pages to find exactly what they are looking for. Anyway, I was just thinking about the Library and some of my old jobs and how much they effect what I do now.

NEW ISSUE OF MY FAVORITE MAGAZINE

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

I love Playboy Magazine… but not for the reason that guys like it. It is a magazine filled with art and illustration NOT PORN. They have some of the most trendy use of type that I have seen in a magazine… but not only are they smart about type they are smart with color and infographics and overall expressing the story through the design of the spread. High Five to Playboy… not for publishing nudes but for being bold and creative with typography.

It is my birthday… Im 23 (an uneventful age)
